No One Knows Us Better Than We Know Us

by Carol Pierce ?2004

What do you really want for your business, for yourself, for your family, and for your people? What price are you willing to pay to get it?

Have you ever asked our brightest minds why they feel they must leave our region and even our state to be gainfully employed? I have.

Their answers resound what the thirty people pictured on Fast Company's April 2004 issue emphatically state--too few companies share the philosophy Pat Taylor and other truly successful decision makers practice.

Successful businesses internationally appreciate, recognize, and seek the wealth of expertise we have right here in South Louisiana and are more than willing to invest in that talent . . . yes, even when their needs can be met elsewhere for less money.

Successful organizations here in Louisiana know hiring local talent educated with our own tax dollars is the secret to keeping our best and brightest at home where they really wish to be.

More importantly, when we hire our own, we contribute to our state's economic development in a manner that costs us taxpayers nothing and actually adds to our state's coffers.

The exceptional work ethic our own people possess, the strong values they uphold, and the amazing creativity that seems to come natural make hiring our own talent and investing in their expertise one of the best ROI's (returns on investment) a wise individual can make to contribute to the success of his company, himself, his family, and his people.

An additional benefit local organizations realize by hiring our own people is no one knows us better than we know us. That secretary knows how to answer the phone in that friendly tone which makes us unique as Cajuns. That supervisor understands the problems our own people face in ways no one else comes close to comprehending. That trainer or speaker knows how to communicate with the audience without causing unintentional insults. And that truly successful decision maker knows investing in someone completely committed to doing the best job possible in the most effective manner possible is getting tons more than what is being invested!

That is why successful businesses internationally know the true secret to success is to hire South Louisiana people to help them create, develop, produce, and market their products. We know what to do, and we're not afraid to do what it takes.

So what do you REALLY want? What are you truly willing to pay to achieve that success for your business, your family, your people, and yourself? Those invaluable resources are right here in your own hands . . . jump now! Grab them before they once more get away!

Is the Customer ALWAYS Right?

by Carol Pierce ?2004

Why do you seek the knowledge of experts? Why do you willingly apply their advice, even if you initially disagree? Is the customer always right? Experience has proven that to be a false belief.

Deciding to buy a new house, I eagerly sought the expertise of a realtor. In her former career, she had been my travel agent, knowing my likes and dislikes quite well. That proved to be a valuable asset in her helping me find my 'perfect' home.

After having the offer on a third home I really loved rejected and knowing a buyer would soon be closing on my old house, I needed my realtor's assistance more than ever. She immediately pulled up almost 30 listings, none really catching my eye.

As she offered to take me look at several in one particular neighborhood, my immediate response was, "But I don't like any houses listed there."

"Trust me," was her immediate response.

Thankfully, I did. Not only did we find three houses I truly liked, but her wise advice led me to the one I bought, the one that has been my perfect home for the last two years.

The shoe was on the opposite foot when an internationally known fabrication firm sought my services to provide a supervisory training program for their personnel. The division superintendent wanted a 16 hour program conducted in the traditional fashion over a two day period.

Yes, he was my customer. But as a former master teacher, I knew his suggestion was not the most effective way to present information that would have lasting value to his people and would be the wisest investment of his company's dollars and his people's time.

Once I explained the rationale behind my recommendations on how to implement that 16 hour program, he respected my expertise and hired me to train his supervisors.

Not only did his personnel gain valuable information they could immediately put into practice in their jobs on the day of each session, but they also utilized their work day to the maximum by not having to be pulled away from their people for two full days.

That superintendent applied the same lesson I learned when my realtor said, "Trust me." We not only respected and trusted the opinion of the expert we hired, but we knew that as the customer, we did not have all the right answers and needed that person's guidance.

When we are the customer, we must remember the real reason we have invested in the services of that expert.

As the expert, we must remember our customers are seeking our wisdom to discover how to get what they really want. Our obligation is to guide them in the right direction when they seem to be taking the wrong path.

Sometimes the customer isn't right!

Kathy's Jag

by Carol Pierce ?2004

Yes, that's Kathy Terracina handing me the keys to a Jaguar, the car you've often heard us joke about her allowing me to drive. Check out the license tag . . . it even has her initials . . . KBT . . . that is no accident!

Little did I realize by joining the Thibodaux Chamber, Kathy would be handing me the keys to a very powerful vehicle that could take me quite easily where ever I dreamed of going with my business in a first class manner with tons of style.

But when she handed me those keys, Kathy was also turning over to me the responsibility to take care of that vehicle in a very wise manner so it could safely get me where ever I wanted to go. Yes, I was free to drive as fast as I wished and travel along whatever roads I would choose, but the consequences of driving too fast or going down the wrong roads would be entirely mine to bear.

The same is true of any organization you choose to join or any business venture you decide to pursue. The successes you achieve will not be acquired alone. People like Kathy will be there to provide you the keys to whatever powerful "vehicle" you need to achieve your dreams. However, the responsibility of what you do with those tools and the way you utilize them will be yours to bear.

Successful individuals, businesses, and organizations realize the intrinsic value of partnerships, but they also understand they are the critical ones in charge of making those key decisions that will drive the direction their successes will head.

Yes, I have thoroughly enjoyed driving "Kathy's Jag" these past three years. However, the time has arrived for me to now step into Kathy's shoes and hand over those keys to yet another individual.

Why? Because driving "Kathy's Jag" has provided me with the knowledge, the resources, and the courage to now drive Carol's new Jag and serve as a role model for others to do the same.

How has joining the Chamber or entering into your business venture now taken you to the place where you can move to the next level?

Can you hand over the keys to your present car to someone you've mentored and now drive away in your own new Jag?

5, 4, 3, . . . 2, 1 . . . Are you ready to leave behind the old that worked so well for you and make that courageous jump now to the new "vehicle" that awaits . . . whatever it may be??? See you in your new car!

Reading Fundamental to Success in Business, Life

by Carol Pierce ?2005

Thibodaux Elementary second graders listened in wide-eyed anticipation as Author/Success Strategist Carol Pierce shared why they should dream big dreams and never give up on those dreams as Pierce read client Marion Duplantis' book Little Pumpkin to children at Thibodaux Elementary School for the school's 2005 Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Community Challenge: Read with Me.

As Pierce read Little Pumpkin, she explained to the children how local Houma author Marion Duplantis overcame amazing obstacles to achieve her dream of seeing Little Pumpkin's story become a published book.

To Pierce's delight, the children became totally involved in the story with one child asking in the follow-up discussion, "What level is it?"

That comment proved how well Lafourche Parish's Accelerated Reading Program is working to promote the school system's dream to increase children's love for reading while improving their reading skills.

A former school librarian and English teacher who now helps businesses, organizations, and individuals jump now to more success, Carol Pierce continues to sees the critical role being an avid reader plays toward an individual's success in the business world.

When serving as librarian at Lafourche Parish's Lockport Lower Elementary, Pierce was disturbed to see how a child's love for reading seemed to wane during the second half of the third grade, especially boys.

Wanting to stem that problem spurred Pierce to study Thibodaux Elementary's RIF program and led her to implement a similar one at Lockport Lower during the late '70's. She witnessed the positive impact RIF creates in encouraging a child's love for reading.

That is why Success Now's Carol Pierce gladly participated in Thibodaux Elementary's RIF program. She knows what RIF and Thibodaux Elementary did to help her develop children's love for reading at Lockport Lower Elementary, the same love for reading that RIF and the Accelerated Reading Program continue to develop at Thibodaux Elementary.

Anyone interested in more information concerning Thibodaux Elementary's award winning RIF program or its Accelerated Reading Program may contact the school's administrative assistant Donna Bergeron at 985-446-6116.

Discovering How to No Longer Settle

"Informative . . .a lot of fun...a wonderful learning experience and a blessing. I am ready to "Jump." I thank you for sharing your experiences and expertise with me. . . Even though it is late, I am going to read some of your (Wanna Self-Publish) book tonight. I am so excited!!"

Those are the words Joyce Brown, author of Joy 2 U, uses to describe Carol Pierce's recent presentation, Discover How to No Longer Settle, at B E Bistro in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

Success Coach/Publishing Consultant Carol Pierce was invited to make a special guest appearance to kickoff B E Bistro's Meet the Author series, a monthly event featuring Louisiana authors.

"Many people know what they really want, but they feel they lack the courage and the confidence or the know-how to get it," states Pierce, the author of Jump Now, Look Later: New Ways to Beat Your Fears.

That Jump Now philosophy featured in her book of the same title is what Pierce shared as she encouraged the audience to apply those steps to decide what they really would like to do with their lives and discover how to remain in Louisiana to get paid to do what they love to do.

Pierce is also the author of Wanna Self-Publish: Here's How.

In her role as a publishing consultant, Pierce devotes a segment of her business to working with authors who are serious about wanting to turn their ideas into a truly professional looking book and encourages those clients to utilize Louisiana resources for the entire process. Pierce shared many of those tips found in her book and applied by her author clients with those attending the B E Bistro event.

Following her talk, Pierce signed both books which were available along with Exceptional Accomplishment, the book she was invited to co-author with several internationally known professional speakers, trainers, and consultants.

Authors interested in learning how to more successfully turn their ideas into that book they've always dreamed of publishing are invited to attend Pierce's One-on-One Success Now Writer's Retreat.

Secrets to Successful Publishing Program a Sell-Out!

How do I get my book successfully published?

Wanna Self-Publish Author/Self-Publishing Expert Carol Pierce answered that question and explained the latest truths about today's publishing industry in a The Secrets to Successful Publishing: Creating a Book That Sells Itself, a sell out program with a waiting list of attendees presented as part of the Women's Council of Greater Baton Rouge's Women's Week Celebration.

Participants discovered why Cajun Expert Alces Adams, author of Not Forgotten, Not Gone says, "You want to create a work of superior quality? You want to learn how to sell it and market it yourself? You want a master of her profession on your team? Carol knows grammar, writing, publishing, marketing, and so much more . . .You need to contact Carol Pierce."

During the Everyday Person to Amazing Author Session, participants learned why having courage and confidence is essential to becoming a successfully published author.

The second session, Wanna Self-Publish or Not, clarified many of the pro's and con's between going with a major publisher, choosing to self-publish, or become independently published. Many participants were suprised to discover simple, cost effective solutions to earning higher profits with their independently published books.

In the session on Creating a Book That Sells Itself, Publishing Expert Carol Pierce shared many of the secrets which lead her clients to producing a 'can't put it down' book which sells itself and has readers begging for the sequel, regardless of the type book it is. Specific examples illustrated what makes a book look truly professional in contrast to those bookstores and libraries automatically reject.

Publishing Consultant/Success Coach Carol Pierce speaks to organizations and works with authors who are serious about wanting to create a top quality book in the most ethical, professional, cost effective manner while earning the greatest profits possible.

Pierce has guided over fifteen authors in publishing books readers don't want to put down and whose readers keep asking for more. Participants had the opportunity to look more closely at those books to see how to improve their own, including Ann Peltier's Sometimes God Says No.

"It is impossible to tell you in words thank you for your encouragement and all that you have done to make publishing Sometimes God Says No worthwhile. Everyone says how easily the book flows--you did all of that. I appreciate all that you do for me," states Ann Peltier.

The demand for client Ann Peltier's powerful autobiography, Sometimes God Says Now, has been so tremendous that Ann Peltier's book entered its second printing in less than a month of its release.

Alces Adams' book, Not Forgotten, Not Gone, proved to the group the long term benefits of making a book more complete than just the manuscript itself.

Following the release of his internationally known work on the history and genealogy of South Louisiana, Adams sent this note to Carol Pierce:

"I've heard words such as 'can't put it down,' 'very well-written,' 'a lot of research,' etc. One person mentioned she had to take a break at about page 65 to bring her mother to the doctor. And she didn't even get to the interesting part, yet!! Another was almost late for work because she started looking at it for lunch. One person was amazed I could write so well (and) fit so many facts in so little space without confusing anyone. I have to take credit for the research, but the well-writtens and can't-put-it-downs are your doing. Those words would not have been applied to the manuscript I took to you---The words are applied to the one I took away from you. Every time I get one of those compliments, you come to mind."

Publishing Expert Carol Pierce is the author of Wanna Self-Publish and Jump Now, Look Later and the co-author of Exceptional Accomplishment.
